Tickets have now all sold, so this website is for event information only.
GWR great days out make lasting memories for our customers, and these are made possible by the everyday hard work and dedication of our amazing GWR colleagues.
To say thank you we have again given colleagues, along with friends and family, the chance to experience their own very special ‘Great Day Out’.
The 2019 event has been designed to offer a wide range of great experiences, and the memories you take away following your attendance at the 2019 Great Day Out will hopefully be very special indeed.
There’ll be something for everyone, and as well as the live exciting attractions provided by the zoo, we will also be offering up the following amazing activities and facilities:
- Entertainers (including face painters)
- Retro Photo Booths (with plenty of fun props and dress up materials)
- Sweet Cart
- American ‘Cotton Candy’ and hot popcorn (both freshly made)
- Giant Lawn Games
- GWR deck chairs and bean bags – so you can relax in style
- GWR branded gifts
These will be hosted in two exclusive GWR locations:
- West Lawn – Main GWR Welcome & Activity Area
- Garden Room (Clifton Pavilion) – GWR Guest Arrival & Activity Area
We are providing free travel on GWR trains (only) all day (for guests with an event ticket travelling with a GWR pass holder) and if required your entry ticket to the event will act as a valid return travel pass.
From Bristol Temple Meads Station, special Great Day Out (First Bus) shuttle buses will be in operation to take you to and from the Zoo. More information can be found on the ‘Getting There’ page.
Great Day Out guests will enter through the Garden Room in the Clifton Pavilion (to the right of the main zoo entrance).
You will be greeted on arrival and given a wrist band which will entitle you to a pre-paid lunch of your choice. Both cold and hot food options are available. For more information please see the ‘Food and Drink’ section on the ‘What’s on’ page.
September weather is never predictable, so remember when you attend on the day, prepare for all eventualities – take your sunscreen, your umbrella, a warm jumper, and of course, your best smile! We are aiming to have a truly Great Day Out whatever the weather!
GWR will have an official photographer at this event, and photo booths will be in operation for use by GWR guests.
Please note the following GDPR notice
Photographs will be taken at the GWR Great Day Out Event…
Our official GWR photographer will be taking photos during the day. They will make every effort to check before taking any pictures to confirm your acceptance.
These images will subsequently be used by GWR in the following ways:
- GWR’s internal (colleague facing) promotion of the Great Day Out event (both now and in the future) – inclusive of hard copy and digital publications
- GWR’s ongoing internal promotion of colleague engagement via both hard copy and digital communication channels (e.g. Western Lines, Yammer)
- Other internal purposes relating to the promotion of GWR’s people agenda
The photographs will not be shared outside of the organisation.
They will be stored securely and will not be kept for longer than they are needed for the purposes listed above.
If you would prefer for you or your child not to be photographed, please advise the photographer immediately and directly on the day.
Should you give your permission, but subsequently change your mind or have concerns, please visit the GWR Zone to speak to the Colleague Engagement & People Insight Team. If you need to speak to us after the event you can do so via phone or email (contact details are shown below). We will ensure that photographs are deleted promptly where this is requested.
Should you wish to have copies of your images please also make contact with us.
Vintage style photo booths will be provided at the Great Day Out for the pleasure of our guests. These will issue hard copy prints (only) to those using them. The booths also automatically digitally store the photos. For this event, no digital copies will be kept, and all digital copies will be deleted.

The Zoo is over 180 years old and contains a number of old buildings and structures – three of which are Grade II listed. However, most of the Zoo is accessible for wheelchair users and those with walking difficulties. There are six unisex accessible toilets located throughout our site. For visitors with disabilities, we have five parking bays near the Zoo entrance.
